We live in a global diabetes epidemic: 415 million people live with diabetes, diabetes claims 5 million lives annually – more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined – and diabetes consumes 12% of our health expenditures. Yet the underlying molecular defects that cause diabetes remain elusive. Learn about the latest achievements in the field of diabetes research, our current understanding of the mechanism of the disease, and the most promising strategies to cure diabetes.
EVGENIY PANZHINSKIY, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in molecular biology from the Novosibirsk State University in Russia and his Phd from the University of Wyoming in the Molecular and Life Sciences Program. His current research at UBC is focused on understanding the role of protein translation in the failure of insulin-producing beta cells during diabetes. Dr. Panzhinskiy holds a prestigious fellowship from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and has presented his work at numerous international conferences and meetings.
